According to Wikipedia, the Japanese word origami is a compound of two smaller Japanese words: "ori", meaning to fold, and "kami", meaning paper. In the Japanese culture, the crane has long been the symbol for long life, prosperity, good health and after WWII, it also became the symbol for PEACE. Peters Township sophomores, Chase Maszle and Maple Chen are uniting with teens from around the globe to assist with restoration efforts in Japan.
The project: The Bezos Foundation has partnered with Architects for Humanity to assist with rebuilding efforts in Japan. To that end, Bezos foundation has committed to donating $2.00 for every paper crane made by students to Architects for Humanity. We are asking that every Peters Township student grades K-12 make 2 cranes each. We estimate that if each student makes at least 2 cranes, we can earn about $16,000 for Architects for Humanity. After all cranes are made, we are asking that they be hung from the ceiling in each of your hallways. We need to take plenty of pictures, upload them to the website, count the cranes and mail them to the foundation. The foundation plans to create an art installation using all of the paper cranes made and present it to the children of Japan to show global solidarity.
To make it interesting, we will have a competition between homerooms in each building and then between each building for the grand prize. Each building will have a homeroom winner~ the homeroom that makes the most crane in each building will receive a prize. The PTSD building that makes the most cranes will win a beautiful gift for the building.
Peters Township School District will invite local school districts to compete against us to see who can make the most cranes. We plan to challenge Upper ST. Clair, Mt. Lebanon, Canon McMillan, South Fayette, Bethel Park, South Park, Chartiers Valley, Washington School District, and the Western Pa. School for the Deaf to make more paper cranes than Peters Township School District. The school district that makes the most paper cranes will win a plaque.
